West Seattle and more specifically Beach Drive resident David Stockert is heading an efffort to paint a nautical themed mural for the long sea wall along the Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook. He's already raised close to $4000 for the project which he sees as a deterrent to the nearly constant tagging and graffiti that mar public walls. There's evidence he's right and the City of Seattle agrees. Real Change (and republished by South Seattle Emerald noted that Mayor Bruce Harrell has included graffiti abatement as a significant part of his One Seattle plan. They noted the city has seen a 50% increase in graffiti between 2019 and 2021.

On January 25th just after midnight, patrol officers located a vehicle illegally parked after hours in the 1000 block of Harbor Avenue Southwest. While speaking with the occupants, police saw a loaded handgun in the center console.

Officers removed the driver out of the vehicle and safely recovered the weapon, which was previously reported stolen. The 27-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for Possessing a Stolen Firearm.

The passenger was detained and had a $7,500 warrant for his arrest issued by the Federal Way Police Department for Physical Control. 

The passenger attempted to flee from officers but was quickly apprehended. He was also armed with a stolen handgun. He was arrested for Unlawful Carry of a Pistol and Resisting Arrest.

This series, part of the White Center Innovation Project, highlights nine BIPOC refugee and immigrant business innovators working to preserve the vibrancy of White Center while resisting displacement. 

Keo Sanh, Owner of the Eazy Duz It Car Club, shared: "I wanted to set an example for the younger generation. Whether it’s giving back to the community, doing charity events, or teaching, it’s a responsibility. Kids are watching you. You don’t know how many lives you change." 

On January 25th, ReThinkTheLink.org hosted a public forum at the Center for Active Living in West Seattle to discuss the proposed West Seattle Light Rail Extension (WSLE), drawing a crowd of concerned citizens and transit advocates. The forum, led by Alan McMurray of Rethink the Link, aimed to delve into the facts surrounding the project, using information gleaned from Sound Transit's documents and public records. The panel included John Niles, an independent researcher and transportation consultant; Martin Pagel, an engineer, cyclist, and transit advocate; and Martin Westerman, an advocate for urban green space preservation. Conrad Cipoletti, a carfree community advocate, moderated the panel.

District 1 City Councilmember Rob Saka shared some updates on the issue of RV encampments vis his newsletter to constituents:

Our office has been actively working with the Mayor’s Unified Care Team (UCT), which brings together multiple city departments to ensure Seattle’s public spaces, sidewalks, and streets remain clean, open, and accessible. This includes resolution of both tent and vehicle encampments throughout D1.

The UCT’s southwest boundaries cover D1 - our district has the most lived-in vehicles as of the third quarter of 2024. UCT reminders:

School of Rock West Seattle is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an open house and a free performance. The community is invited to the celebration on February 7th.
